Roots Blower

Roots Blowers, also known as Roots Air Blowers or Positive Displacement Blowers, are a type of rotary lobe pump commonly used in industrial and municipal applications for moving air or other gases.

Introduction

Roots Blowers, also known as Roots Air Blowers or Positive Displacement Blowers, are a type of rotary lobe pump commonly used in industrial and municipal applications for moving air or other gases. They are primarily used for providing a constant flow of medium-pressure air in situations where a high volume is required without the need for high pressure like those provided by compressors.

The operating principle is based on the counter-rotation of two symmetrically shaped, triple-lobe (or bi-lobe) impellers within a sealed chamber. As the impellers rotate, air is trapped in the pockets between the impellers and the casing wall. This trapped volume of air is then carried from the intake side to the discharge side without compression internally. The actual pressure increase is achieved by the "backflow" or resistance from the system on the discharge side.

Key components of a Roots blower** include the blower casing, a pair of synchronized impellers, timing gears, shafts, and oil seals and bearings. The timing gears are critical as they ensure the two impellers rotate in perfect synchronization without touching each other. The assembly is typically driven by an electric motor or a diesel engine.
