The valve operates by a quarter-turn (90-degree) rotation of a disc (the "butterfly"), which is mounted on a central shaft. In the open position, the disc is parallel to the flow, offering minimal resistance. In the closed position, the disc rotates to be perpendicular to the flow, sealing against a resilient seat integrated in the valve body to shut off the medium.
